Definition:

"VETERINARY TECHNICIAN' means a person receiving a diploma or its equivalent from a two-year college level program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association and who provides veterinary services under the supervision and direction of a licensed veterinarian who is responsible for the performance of that technician.

Eligibility:

Any person desiring a certificate to practice in Arkansas may make written application to the board showing that he/she is:

  1. A citizen of the United States or an applicant for citizenship; and
  2. A person of moral integrity and acceptable ethical standards.

The application shall also contain the following information and must be accompanied by an application fee (nonrefundable) made payable to the Arkansas Veterinary Medical Examining Board:

  1. A current photograph of the applicant;
  2. A diploma or its equivalent from a two-year college level program accredited by the AVMA (a photocopy is acceptable);
  3. A certified copy of college transcripts;
  4. Vet Tech National Examination passing score provided by AAVSB(American Assocition of Veterinary State Boards);
  5. A letter of recommendation signed by a licensed veterinarian and notarized.

After obtaining a degree from a 2-year accredited program in Veterinary Technology and upon completing the application for certification, a certificate of qualification will be issued to qualified applicants.

Veterinary Technician National Exam:

All applicants are required to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam provided by AAVSB.

The score made on the VTNE taken in another state will be will be accepted in Arkansas.

Each applicant will be responsible for having the results of the VTNE transferred to this office via AAVSB. To have your scores transferred contact:

The VTNE is given in January and June each year. The fee charged by AAVSB is $300.00 and is in addition to your application fee for state certification.
